Alun Norman ANDREW

Halendy Garage, Rhewl Road, Rhewl, Mostyn, Flintshire, CH6 6JJ

BACKGROUND HISTORY

Alun Andrew and his father, Basil, started the business in December 1983. Alun had been employed as a mechanic in Prestatyn for twelve years working on both light and commercial vehicles. His father, Basil, had originally been a mechanic and also worked for P & O Lloyd in the forties but later went to work driving tippers for 'Rhosesmor Sand and Gravel', carrying their much needed products mainly to Liverpool for the rebuilding of the City in the post war years. From the mid-fifties Basil went to work as a driver at Crosville Flint Depot up until the demise of "conductors" when he then returned to P & O Lloyd for a short period prior to setting up the business with Alun. Engineering and transport were in their blood.

The first vehicle owned was a 12 seater Ford (see historic fleet for a link to a photograph). Two years later in 1985 the fleet had grown to 3 buses with another Transit and a full size Bedford YRQ / Duple Dominant being added.

In 1992 Alun took on a partner Ron Parker but the partnership ended in 1995 and subsequently Alun has run the business himself.

The size of the fleet has mainly been in in the region of 3 – 6 and the work has been predominately private hire with a few school contracts.

Some of Alun's fleet have been preserved by enthusiasts - one of the latest being N409HVT a Mercedes Benz 709D / Plaxton Beaver which has returned to its former home in the Potteries.

In December 2022 Alun decided to retire. His three school contracts were handed over to Voel Coaches and he sold his Mercedes Benz Vario O814D / Plaxton Cheetah - YW05VBC to them.

The very best wishes are offered to Alun and his partner, Janet, for a long and happy retirement.
